You are reading an article prepared during the development of the pirate life simulator game Corsairs Legacy, created to help popularize the maritime theme in general and pirate games in particular. You can follow the project news on our website, as well as on our YouTube channel and on Telegram.
On September 7, 2021, we interviewed Aureliy, the developer of Tempest: Pirate Action RPG, who built his game from scratch. We also asked a number of questions about the development of the game itself. You can watch the full version of the Tempest interview on our YouTube channel or read a short version on our website.
It’s no secret that the creator of Tempest left his project, ending his work with the publisher HeroCraft, and moved on to the economic strategy game Cliff Empire, as well as a shooter set in the same universe.
Even so, Tempest: Pirate Action RPG has received many positive reviews on Steam: 70% overall worldwide and 81% in the Russian-speaking segment.
Aureliy has demonstrated his skills to the entire gaming community, and his experience in the industry has only grown since then. So the question is: is he planning to make a new pirate game?
“After a few years, the theme is certainly tempting again, but to avoid reinventing the wheel, I still hope to play Skull & Bones. I even signed up for the beta. There was no response. From what I’ve seen in the news, they’ve had some release issues. In terms of aesthetics, it’s probably impossible to catch up with them. So sometimes the desire to do something better is best replaced by the desire to play something high-quality—and to make something that’s within your means.”
However, the future of Skull & Bones remains a mystery to the gaming community. The studio working on it has faced numerous problems and reworks. So Aureliy offered a rough forecast in case we don’t actually see a AAA pirate game anytime soon.
“Maybe Skull & Bones will come out. If it doesn’t, I’ll have to make something else to delight players whose appetites have already been whetted—because graphics really took a big leap forward with the release of RTX cards.
If I were to make another game in this setting… I already have some ideas. It wouldn’t be a sequel—Tempest 2 or anything like that. No, it would be something separate, more hardcore, darker, and of course with elements of mysticism. But it’s not planned for the next few years.”
It’s hard to say what would be more exciting to play: a AAA title that’s aimed at a broad audience and is fairly casual in many ways, or Aureliy’s darker and more hardcore—but also significantly more budget—project.
Unfortunately, instead of either of these great options, all we can do is wait.
We hope this material was useful to you!
